The Day of Local Government

The Day of Local Government (the Day of a Member of Local Government) is celebrated in Poland every year on 27 May. The holiday was ordained by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (the lower house of the parliament of Poland) in 2000 for the purpose of commemorating the first fully democratic, local government elections of 27 May 1990. It was a landmark event in course of building democratic Poland after 1989.
The holiday underlines the importance of local government, that is to say the right of local communities to self-governance. On this day the role of commune councils, district councils and voivodeship assemblies, as well as the responsibility of local authorities – mayors of rural, mixed urban-rural and urban communes – for regional development and the quality of life of residents are emphasised.
